Education

What We Know

At Neighbour to Neighbour we believe that education is the key to poverty prevention.

  • Research shows that if a child is not reading at grade level by the end of grade 3, that child will struggle with learning throughout their academic career.
  • Research also shows that decisions and supports that affect high school success and lead to participation in post-secondary education begin early in a youth’s academic life and that successful interventions should begin as early as middle school.

What We Do

Jack Parent Reading Program

The Neighbour to Neighbour Reading Program directly addresses poverty prevention as education plays a key role in human, social and economic development. Offered in select schools on Hamilton Mountain since 2003 this program serves children in grades 1-3. Trained volunteers not only help children who are reading below grade level improve their literacy skills, but they help build a child’s self-confidence through one-on-one interaction. Research shows that if a child is not reading at grade level by the end of grade 3, that child will struggle with learning throughout their academic career. The Neighbour to Neighbour Reading Program addresses the need for early literacy intervention.

Math Success Program

The Math Success Program is an initiative of Neighbour to Neighbour aimed at supporting academic success and post-secondary access for youth experiencing multiple barriers. Research shows that decisions and supports that affect high school success and lead to participation in post-secondary education begin early in a youth’s academic life; and that successful interventions should begin as early as middle school. The Neighbour to Neighbour Math Success Program provides students in grades 7 & 8 the opportunity to work with highly trained staff and volunteers over 25 weeks, thereby improving math skills, building proficiency and boosting self-confidence – all directly impacting the likelihood of succeeding academically and ultimately attending post-secondary education.
